Avichi Meiyappa Chettiar (India, 1907), better known as A. V. Meiyappan or simply AVM, who established his own Saraswathi Sound Productions in 1935 and then his own Pragathi Studios in 1940 and later his own AVM Productions in 1945, was the most successul Tamil director of the 1940s, with hits such as Sabhapathy (1941), an adaptation of Pammal Sambandha Mudaliar's play, and Nam Iruvar (1947), an adaptation of Palaniyaandi Neelakantan's play "Thyaga Ullam" made famous by the interpretation of actor Singanallur Venkataramana Sahasranamam. Nanda Kumar (1938), the Tamil remake of a Marathi film, directed by Keshav Rao Dhaibar, introduced composer Sozhavanthan Varadharajan Venkatraman (aka SVV). He also produced Sundarrao Nadkarni's Telugu film Bhookailas (1940). Vazhkai (1949), written by MV Raman in Tamil, introduced actress and dancer Vyjayanthimala Raman. The Tamil film Parasakthi (1952) debuted future star Sivaji Ganesan. Sundaram Balachander's Andha Naal (1954), also in Tamil, was the rare Indian film without any song. AVM became one of the movie moguls of Tamil cinema.
