Girish Kasaravalli (1950), after graduating with the Tarkovsky-esque Avasesh (1975), became a leader of "parallel cinema" in Kannada of Karnataka with: Ghatashraddha/The Ritual (1977), based on a story by Udupi Rajagopalacharya, set in South India in pre-independence India among the orthodox Brahmin class and focused on the plight of a teenage girl who is seduced and has an abortion; Tabarana Kathe (1986), based on a story by Poornachandra Tejaswi; the bilingual existentialist domestic drama Mane/ House (1990), titled Ek Ghar in Hindi; Kubi Matthu Iyala (1992), Kraurya/ Cruelty (1996), Thaayi Saheba/ Mother Saheba (1997), an adaptation of Ranganath Shyamrao Lokapura's novel; Dweepa/ The Island (2002), an adaptation of Na D'Souza's novel; Haseena (2004), based on a story by Banu Mushtaq, about a poor lower-class woman who is abandoned by her abusive husband; Naayi Neralu/ Shadow of the Dog (2006), an adaptation of Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa's novel, centered again on a woman in pre-independence India; Gulabi Talkies (2008), based on a story by Janaki Srinivasa Murthy (aka Vaidehi); Kanasemba Kudureyaneri/ Riding the Stallion of Dreams (2010), and Koormavatara/ The Tortoise an Incarnation (2011), based on a story by Veerabhadrappa Kumbar (aka KumVee).
