In 1937 Tiruchengodu Ramalingam Sundaram Mudaliar (aka TR Sundaram) started Modern Theatres in Selam/Salem, halfway between Chennai and Coimbatore. He produced
the first Malayalam talkiem Balan (1938, lost), directed by Shewakaram Nottani, and personally directed Utthama Puthiran (1940), a remake of
James Whale's The Man in the Iron Mask (1939), the film that
turned Pudukkottai Ulaganathan Pillai Chinnappa into a star (he had debuted in the boys company Madurai Original Boys), and Manthiri Kumari (1950), that turned Maruthur Gopalan Menon Ramachandran into a star.
