Lycia is the project of a Michael Van Portfleet, a music recluse who has
produced some of the most avantgarde and subtle gothic/electronic music
of the last decade. His latest album, Estrella (Projekt),
pushed the edge in several ways and more than one listener were caught by
surprise, and quite a few started liking it only after a few additional spins.
May he have left his audience way behind in his perusal for a superior form
of rock music?
What is your first name, Michael or Robert? Your email address reads Robert...
Tell me about the beginnings. How did you end up in Arizona? How did you start
playing music? What kind of music? How did it develop? Why did you pick the
name Lycia? What were your inspirations for Wake?
How important was Dave Galas' contribution on Ionia?
From A Day In The Stark Corner on your compositional skills started matching
those of a symphonic composer: was it the electronic devices or what that
inspired you to compose thicker and thicker harmonies?
What is the role of Bleak's side project?
At the beginning your music fit the "gothic" profile, but then it developed
into something else, more philosophical and hermetic. Was it just growing up
or more than that?
Also, are lyrics still functioning the same way? I almost feel that at the
beginning songs were written around lyrics and later music came first...
At least at the beginning lyrics were more convoluted, later the music became
more convoluted (in a positive way, of course).
The Burning Circle And Then Dust is the work that helped many listeners
discover Lycia.
Can you tell me how the album was born and what it is all about and anything
else about its gestation and the way it was recorded and what makes it so
special?
To me Cold marked a distinctive change in style. Was it because of Galas'
departure or because you moved to Ohio? Why did you move to Ohio by the way?
Estrella emphasizes even more female vocals: planned or accident?
What else can you tell us about Estrella's gestation, orchestration,
structure and meaning?
What are you working on now?
To this date, what are your favorite Lycia albums and why?
Your favorite tracks? (If you had to pick three of your compositions for
immortality, which ones would you pick and why?)
>What do you do and do you like to do in real life?
"I remember things/ things from long ago/ days that were so bare/ times that
seemed so low".

(Translation by/ tradotto da Cinzia Russi)
Robert…
Dimmi un po’ dei tuoi esordi. Come sei finito in Arizona? Come hai iniziato
a suonare?
Da A Day In The Stack Corner in poi le tue capacita’ compositive
stati I devices elettronici o cos’altro?
O almeno, all’inizio le liriche erano piu’
convolute mentre dopo le musica e’ diventata piu’ convoluta (in senso
positivo, ovviamente).
The Burning Circle And then Dust e’ l’album che ha aiutato molti
ascoltatori a scoprire Lycia.
inciso, come mai ti sei trasferito in Ohio?
immortalarli, quali sceglieresti e perche’?)
