My favorite formulas

  • Albert Einstein (1915): The metrics of spacetime is determined by the distribution of mass
  • Andrei Kolmogorov (1965): The complexity of a string is the length of the shortest possible description of the string
  • Leonhard Euler (1748): A consequence of Roger Cotes' trigonometric equation ln (cos x + i sin x) = ix
  • Stephen Hawking (1970): The entropy of a black hole is proportional to its surface area, which means that black holes emit radiation, which means that eventually black holes disappear with all the information contained inside them (note that this equation relates several fundamental constants: k is Boltzmann's constant, c is Einstein's speed of light, G is Newton's gravitational constant, and h is Planck's constant)
