- (June 2006)
The Jordanian-Israeli-Iraqi alliance.
Jordan and Israel have been cooperating for years, even before Abdullah became
king, to curb terrorism. After Hamas won the elections, Jordan has been the
main actor in pressuring the new government to recognize Israel.
Jordan has distanced itself from Syria when the pressure mounted for a Syrian
withdrawal from Lebanon. Jordan has been active to provide intelligence against
suspected Islamic terrorists.
Despite the fact that Jordan has a large Palestinian population,
no other Middle Eastern country cooperates so much with the USA and Israel.
When Zarqawi masterminded a terrorist attack in Jordan in november 2005, he
knew perfectly well what he was doing: King Abdullah "is" indeed an enemy of
the Islamic fundamentalists. Apparently, Jordan did not waste time to
retaliate. The Jordanian secret services found Zarqawi and told the USA where
to drop the bomb that killed him. Needless to say, Jordan did a favor not
only to itself but also to Iraq. Suddenly, Jordan looks like the natural
friend and brother of Iraq, as it has been since the two countries were created.
Thus Jordan has become a fundamental piece of the USA strategy in the Middle
East, working to create peace with Israel and to stop the civil war in Iraq.
The new axis leaves one country clearly more isolated than ever: Syria.
And Syria is accused (rightly or wrongly so) of being the main channel
of foreign terrorists who want to enter Iraq.
Who would complain if the Iraqi army started incursions into southern Syria to
catch terrorists who are preparing to enter Iraq?
Who would complain if the Iraqi army toppled the Syrian regime?
Israel and Jordan would even help the Iraqi army with all the intelligence
needed.
If the Syrian regime fell, the Jordanian-Israeli-Iraqi alliance would create
a new zone of economic and military cooperation, extending from Lebanon to
the Emirates.
The Zarqawi operation may be just the beginning of an era in which the
Middle East provides peace and security for itself,
given the failure of the USA to do so.
King Abdullah may have realized that it is pointless to complain and wait
to see if and when the USA succeeds. He may have more chances of succeeding
where the USA failed.
