The Seven Wonders of the World

  1. Pyramid of Cheops (2550 BC)
  2. Hanging Gardens of Babylonia (580 BC)
  3. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (550 BC)
  4. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia (by Pheidias, Greece, 432 BC)
  5. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (354 BC)
  6. The Colossus of Rhodos (Greece, 290 BC)
  7. The Pharos of Alexandria (Egypt, 300 BC)
These were compiled (probably) by Herodotus, who lived when they were still standing (and not too far from his place). Not my fault if most of these have been destroyed.

While attributed as far back as to Herodotus, the "standard" list came to us via Antipater of Sidon, a minor greek poet who obviously had nothing better to do. The man who wrote the book "Seven Wonders of the World" was actually a Callimachus of Cyrene, but that book has not survived, so we don't know if he meant the Herodotus list or another list. But his title stuck and today we use his title ("seven wonders") to refer to Herodotus & Antipater list (which was really titled "seven sights").

Other popular "seven wonders" included:

This is what happened to some of these wonders:
