While attributed as far back as to Herodotus, the "standard" list came to us via Antipater of Sidon, a minor greek poet who obviously had nothing better to do. The man who wrote the book "Seven Wonders of the World" was actually a Callimachus of Cyrene, but that book has not survived, so we don't know if he meant the Herodotus list or another list. But his title stuck and today we use his title ("seven wonders") to refer to Herodotus & Antipater list (which was really titled "seven sights").

Other popular "seven wonders" included:

• Parthenon (by Pheidias, Greece, 438 BC)
• The Palace of Knossos in Creta (Greece, 15th BC)
• The Tower of Babylonia (Iraq)
• The walls of Babylonia (Iraq)

• The Pharos, that was the tallest building in the world for over 1000 years, was destroyed in an earthquake in the 14th c (some ruins were found in 1994 in the harbor of today's Alexandria)
• The colossus of Rhodos (built in the third century BC by Chares of Lindos) collapsed during the earthquake of 225 BC. The fragments were eventually stolen by muslim pirates who sold them to a jewish merchant who melted the bronze and sold it. We have no record of how it looked like.
• The palace of Knossos was burned in 1425 BC during a riot and definitely destroyed by the earthquake that destroyed the Minoan civilization. The ruins are still visible.
• The statue of Zeus decayed over the centuries and eventually it was taken to Constantinople where it burned in 476 AD. We have coins that show how it looked like.
• The Parthenon was destroyed in 1687 by an accidental explosion of the gunpowder of the Turkish garrison.
• Temple of Artemis was estroyed by the Goths in 262 AD
• The mausoleum at Halikarnassos collapsed in an earthquake during the 13th century (stones from the mausoleum were used by the Knights of Malta to build a nearby castle).
• The Hanging Gardens may have collapsed in 600BC, but their existence has never been conclusively demonstrated.
• The Tower of Babel never existed. It was a western myth born out of the Ziggurat of Babylonia, built in 1775 BC
