David "Screaming Lord" Sutch was a British rocker of the early 1960s who turned Screamin' Jay Hawkins' horror rockabilly into a frantic, decadent and silly show for teenagers. Sutch founded the Savages in 1961 (with members such as Ritchie Blackmore, the future Deep Purple guitarist). My Big Black Coffin (1961), also known as Till The Following Night, Jack the Ripper (1963), Monster In Black Tight (1963), Dracula's Daughter (1964) and She's Fallen In Love With A Monster Man (1964) created a cult following in the era of teen idols and the Beatles. Sutch was the opposite of the mainstream and enjoyed provoking the bourgeoisie.

Alas, that meant that his show was never recorded on album. His first album came out much later, Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends (1970). Despite the numerous guests (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Nicky Hopkins), the album does not do Sutch justice. Blackmore, Keith Moon and Noel Redding played on Hands Of Jack The Ripper (1972), but, again, the music was conventional hard-rock with lots of histrionics. Sutch recorded two more albums, Alive And Well (Babylon, 1982) and Rock and Horror (Ace, 1982), having been rediscovered by the punk generation.

Later he became a politician, having founded the Monster Raving Loony Party (already in 1963 he had tried with the National Teenage Party). Sutch committed suicide in june 1999, at the age of 58.

My Big Black Coffin (1961), conosciuta anche come Till The Following Night, Jack The Ripper (1963), Monster In Black Tight (1963), Dracula' s Daughter (1964) e She's Fallen In Love With A Monster Man (1964) crearono un seguito da culto nell' era dei teen idols e dei Beatles.

Blackmore, Keith Moon and Noel Redding suonarono in Hands Of Jack The Ripper (1972), ma, ancora, la musica è hard-rock convenzionale con molte teatralità. Sutch registrò ancora due album, Alive And Well (Babylon, 1982) e Rock and Horror (Ace, 1982), riscoperto dal movimento punk .
