Black Widow was a British band that debuted right after the Led Zeppelin had made hard-rock a money machine and after King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator had invented progressive-rock. Kip Trevor on vocals, Jim Gannon on guitar, Zoot Taylor on keyboards and Clive Jones on horns were originally in Pesky Gee, whose Exclamation Mark (Pye, 1969) was an album of mediocre blues-rock. The band changed name to Black Widow and changed style, embracing exoteric and horror themes. The lengthy suite of Sacrifice (1970) brought to the forefront the "dark" elements that were restrained on so many British albums of the era. The sound was very similar to Colosseum's jazz/rock/classic fusion (as in the Valentyne Suite). Come To The Sabbath was the anthemic movement. In Ancient Days was the zenith of pathos. Gannon signed all the tracks.

II (1970) was a more cohesive work, but lacked some of the satanic inspiration of the debut album (the notable exception being Legend Of Creation). Jim Gannon left the band and bassist Geoff Griffith became the main composer. The Battle is the tour de force on III. IV (Mystic, 1998) collects unreleased material of 1972.

Come To The Sabbath fu l'inno, In Ancient Days lo zenit del pathos. Gannon firmo' ogni pezzo.
