Esordi` com Back Home In Sulphur Springs (Rounder, 1972).

Altri album del periodo sono Norman Blake and others (HDS, 1975), Old And New (Flying Fish, 1975), Live At McCabe's (Takoma, 1976), Norman Blake & Red Rector (County, 1976), Blackberry Blossom (Flying Fish, 1977) * Directions (Takoma, 1978).

Negli anni '80 continuo` a registrare opere in cui dimostrava la sua tecnica eccellente: Full Moon On The Farm (Rounder, 1981), Original Underground Music From The Mysterious South (Rounder, 1983), Nashville Blues (Rounder, 1984), Lighthouse On The Shore (Rounder, 1985), Slow Train Through Georgia (Rounder, 1987); e due album con Tony Rice, Blake & Rice (Rounder, 1987) e Blake & Rice 2 (Rounder, 1990).

I dischi con Nancy Blake rimangono fra i suoi migliori: The Norman And Nancy Blake Compact Disc (Rounder, 1986), Natasha's Waltz (Rounder, 1987), Blind Dog (Rounder, 1988), Just Gimme Somethin' I'm Used To (1993), While Passing Along This Way (Sugar Hill, 1995), The Hobo's Last Ride (Shanachie, 1996).

Chattanooga Sugar Babe (Shanachie, 1999) was the first solo album of the 1990s, followed by Flower From The Fields of Alabama (Shanachie, 2001) and Meeting On Southern Soil (Red House, 2001), a collaboration with Peter Ostroushko

Norman Blake is one of the finest bluegrass guitarists of all time.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Blake was raised in Georgia. He debuted as a performer in 1954 with the Dixie Drifters and spent the 1960s as a studio musician, backing many country music singers including Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and John Hartford. His debut album was Back Home in Sulphur Springs (Rounder, 1972).

Blake vaulted to the top of the charts with the traditional "string band" music of The Fields of November (Flying Fish, 1974), accompanied by (then) Nancy Ann Short on the violoncello, Tut Taylor on dobro and Charlie Collins on fiddle. After his solo album Whiskey Before Breakfast (Rounder, 1976) containing the mozzafiato song Under the Double Eagle, Blake found a perfect balance playing with Taylor, Clemens and jazz bassist Dave Holland (the song Saurkraut ' n Solar Energy) on Blake, Burns, Holland, Taylor (Flying Fish, 1976), and with the gospel-blues-cajun fusion of The Rising Fawn String Ensemble (Rounder, 1979).

His other albums of this period were Norman Blake and Others (HDS, 1975), Old and New (Flying Fish, 1975), Live at McCabe' s (Takoma, 1976), Norman Blake & Red Rector (County, 1976), Blackberry Blossom (Flying Fish, 1977), and Directions (Takoma, 1978).

During the 1980s, Blake continued to demonstrate virtuosity with his albums Full Moon on the Farm (Rounder, 1981), Original Underground Music From the Mysterious South (Rounder, 1983), Nashville Blues (Rounder, 1984), Lighthouse on the Shore (Rounder, 1985), Slow Train Through Georgia (Rounder, 1987), and two albums with Tony Rice: Blake & Rice (Rounder, 1987) and Blake & Rice 2 (Rounder, 1990).

The discs with Nancy Blake remain among his finest: The Norman and Nancy Blake Compact Disc (Rounder, 1986), Natasha' s Waltz (Rounder, 1987), Blind Dog (Rounder, 1988), Just Gimme Somethin' I' m Used To (1993), While Passing Along This Way (Sugar Hill, 1995), and The Hobo' s Last Ride (Shanachie, 1996).
