Los Angeles' singer-songwriter Tom Russell debuted in the 1970s in a duo with Patricia Hardin that released Ring Of Bone (1976) and Wax Museum (1978), but remained unknown for more than two decades, despite albums such as Heart On A Sleeve (1984), the eclectic Road to Bayamon (1988), Poor Man's Dream (1989), Hurricane Season (1991), and Cowboy Real (1993), The Rose of the San Joaquin (1995), The Long Way Around (1997), Song of the West (1997).

Reborn as an intellectual auteur with the concept album Man from God Knows Where (1999), he released the increasingly brainy Borderland (2001), Modern Art (2003), Hotwalker (2005), another concept, Love and Fear (2006), and Blood And Candle Smoke (2009).
