Los Angeles-based duo Bird And The Bee, i.e.
vocalist Inara George
(the daughter of Little Feat's Lowell George),
who had already released the solo All Rise (2004),
and multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstin,
debuted with
The Bird And The Bee (Blue Note, 2007), a collection of
elegant
Serge Gainsbourg-inspired
space-age (i.e. electronically arranged) Latin-soul-jazz
lounge ballads, notably I Hate Camera and
Fucking Boyfriend.
The sullen
Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future (Blue Note, 2009)
lost the magic of the first album, perhaps because this time Kurstin really
achieved what he wanted: a trite revision of Burt Bacharach's pop muzak.
The vocalist does her best to salvage
Polite Dance Song and Love Letter to Japan.
Kurstin also produced (and mostly composed) pop star Lily Allen's
It's Not Me It's You (2009).
