Vancouver's Frog Eyes, featuring melodramatic vocalist Carey Mercer ,
sounded like a romantic version of Xiu Xiu or a cubistic version of
Roxy Music on their first two albums, The Bloody Hand (Absolutely Kosher, 2002) and especially
The Golden River (Global Symphonic, 2003), both characterized by
declamations in the vein of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, by Kafkian atmospheres
due to keyboardist Grayson Walker and guitarist Michael Rak, and by a fragmented stream of consciousness.
If the singer's verbose fury sounded unchecked on The Folded Palm (2004),
Tears Of The Valedictorian (2007), adding keyboardist Spencer Krug and containing the nine-minute Bushels, reached for emotional and musical balance.
Swan Lake was a super-trio formed by Dan Bejar of
Destroyer,
Spencer Krug of
Wolf Parade
and
Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes that debuted with
Beast Moans (2006).
