Toronto-based singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado would have been a relatively
traditional folk-pop artist, blessed with a passionate and creative vocal style,
had not been for the pop and hip-hop arrangements.
Whoa Nelly (2000), containing the sophisticated I'm Like a Bird
but also the catchy
On the Radio, Well Well, and Turn Off the Light,
turned her into a star competing with the likes of
Britney Spears.
Subsequent albums amply proved her mediocrity as a composer:
the abysmal Folklore (2003),
the trivial Loose (2006), produced by Timbaland and containing her biggest hit Promiscuous, an album that simply recycled stereotypes of the teenage pop muzak of the 1990s.
