The "dark ambient" style popularized by
the Scandinavian "cold wave" of the 1990s (Raison D'Etre, Ordo Equilibrio, Arcana, Mortiis) was resurrected in the 2000s by
Norway's Northaunt (Haerleif Langas) and his
lush melancholy electronic tapestries evoking icy hostile landscapes.
The Ominous Silence (2001) and Barren Land (2004)
mined the same formula:
acoustic (guitar/piano) melodies and spoken word over menacing drones.
His style became more austere with
Horizons (2006), notably the 14-minute Night Came To Us, that dispensed with both melodic elements and lyrics.
