New York-based singer-songwriter
Jennifer O'Connor mined a territory that had been mined so many times.
It was terribly difficult to say something original in the jargon of folk-rock
that had not been said one thousand times before.
Jennifer O'Connor (2002) showed talent and sincerity but little more.
Even the composite vignettes of The Color and the Light (2005) rarely
managed to galvanize, sounding more like the work of an aging musician from
the 1970s than a rising star of the 2000s.
Over the Mountain Across the Valley and Back to the Stars (2006) and
Here With Me (Matador, 2008) continued what was fundamentally
an elegant and honest routine.
