Notes by Alessandro Zanette:
  1. On the difficulty to find the locations of the artworks Not only paintings! But illustrations, photographies, sculptures, design objects, performances, installations, architecture, videoart, movies, digital art and.more: it's rather difficult to list the location of everything in this history of the visual arts. The medium affect the artwork and in some case this make the possibility to find the localization almost impossible. One thing is to find where a Dali's painting is or a building, another is to find where an interactive installation may be (and if it's still available at our days). Indeed, many artworks are not anymore on view. Some appeared in galleries/museums, then they may have been sold, exchanged, temporary exposed, sold again, etc.In other words, some artworks moves, they are not always in the same place.

Copies are also a challenge in this research as they are spread around the world. In case of comics and similar I just wrote printed more times.

About digital arts the localization tend to be even more difficult, in some cases was almost ridiculous to look for a place. So, I found more appropriate to put an official link. Needless to say many digital artist have a website with a detailed description of their works and their exhibitions.

About video art, some works are part of installations or belong to museum's archives, anyway when I found those videos on the web I put a link, even though this link came sometimes from unofficial resources such as youtube or vimeo.

  2. Sources and useful links The source I used has been almost totally the web. I found the location from the official websites of the museums or of the artists when possible. Sometimes I used evilpedia (.), other times internet sent me back to your website like if you are the only one in the world to know a specific artwork. I found some useful databases too:
    • www.artchive.com/ftp_site.htm - Mark Harden's Artchive, paintings
    • www.greatbuildings.com - very good database of architecture
    • www.vdb.org - Video Data Bank, for videoart
    • www.medienkunstnetz.de - Media art, digital art, installations, etc.
    • myboyfriendcamebackfromth.ewar.ru - for net art
  3. Statistics The list contains more than 1700 works, but many do not take part of this survey. Like almost 400 movies, around 150 artworks with no place identified, around 100 installations mostly like temporary, 40 works on sale, 40 from private collections, 40 works printed more times, many digital things that haven't a place, and few more. Therefore this statistics are to be taken with suspicious. At least, we can get some ideas:
    • Museums: MoMA 89 (29 currently not on view), Metropolitan Museum of Art 24, Philadelphia Museum of Art 23, Tate 22, Guggenheim Museum New York 17, SFMOMA 16, Albright-Knox Art Gallery 12, Whitney Museum of Art 9, Museee d'Orsay 8, J. Paul Getty Museum 7, Saatchi Gallery 5, Musee de l'Orangerie 3, Leopold Museum 3
    • Cities: New York 204, London 50, Chicago 30, Paris 29, San Francisco 26, Philadelphia 24, Los Angeles 18, Washington D.C. 16, Tokyo 14, Buffalo 13, Berlin 12, Vienna 11, Zurich 7, Amsterdam 6, Milan 5, Madrid 4
    • Countries: USA 432, England 62, France 46, Germany 38, Italy 23, Japan 22, China 16, Switzerland 14, Netherlands 12, Mexico 12, Spain 12, Russia 9, Canada 7, Denmark 6, Israel 2, Norway 2
  4. A meditation Visual artworks are often unique pieces. In some cases you cannot really get what the artist did unless you see his/her work with your eyes. Some artworks, for example, astonish the observer also because of their size. This effect cannot be reproduced by any image in any book or through the monitor of a computer. I have a book of the Sistine Chapel, but there is no comparison to be there. Then think about sculptures or installations. One other thing: colour. Google "van gogh crowds in a wheat field" and look the result images. Every picture has a slight difference in colour, and this happen as well in prints. Thus, the visual art lover should move and go to see the real artwork to better understand what the artist really did. When then came the problem to preserve a material...matter is a matter. I wonder what will happen in three thousand years from now. Perhaps the Sistine Chapel will be restored so many times that what will be possible to see will be there only because of the restorers and of the original hand of Michelangelo will remain basically nothing. Everything that can be properly digitalized wins the "space challenge". With appropriate devices, movies and other (like music) can be copied and reproduced well everywhere. We are just in an early stage of this, but potentially the digital domain also win the "time challenge" of art.
