Ilaiyaraaja (born Gnanadesikan Rasaiya in 1943) is a Tamil Nadu
(India) composer who blends western and
Indian styles of composition and performance, not to mention western and
Indian instruments.
Fluent in both carnatic and western classical music, his compositions are
collected on
How To Name It? (1988), that experimented a fusion of Bach and raga,
List Nothing But Wind (1989), featuring flutist Hari Prasad Chaurasia
and experimenting with Mozart,
Wings and the live Music Journeys (ReR, 2005).
His first symphony was performed in 1993.
He has also scored soundtracks for hundreds of Indian movies, becoming famous
thanks to one of them, Annakkili 91976), and scored a few devotional albums.
