The austere style and the nocturnal overtones prevail on the more conceptual Klezmer Soul (World Class, 1997). The mournful themes of Hakotel and Why (which is a mini-concerto), the blues-jazz piano elegy Anne, the melancholy Al Kapav Yavi (reminiscent of the Beatles' Yesterday) are all downbeat and introverted. Even the soulful clarinet that stands out in the cabaret music of Jerusalem or in the solemn bolero of Negev bears the stigmata of existential crucifixion. The instrumental ambitions of the combo are evident in the neoclassical flute and piano sonata Anastasia, the nostalgic and funereal Lullaby for Clarinet, Piano and Strings (worthy of a Cajkovsky symphony) all the way to the full-fledge romantic strings of Shabbes. They later renamed themselves World Quintet. |
