Govindan Aravindan (1935), already a cartoonist known for the series "Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum/ Small People and Big World" (1961-73), directed Uttarayanam/ Throne of Capricorn (1974), scripted by playwright Thikkodiyan (born P. Kunjanandan Nair), the mythological Kanchana Sita/ Golden Sita (1977), an adaptation of Sreekantan Nair's 1961 play, Thampu/ Circus Tent (1978), shot in black and white in a documentarian style, Kummatty/ Bogeyman (1979), the story about a magician scripted by playwright Kavalam Narayana Panicker, Esthappan/ Twilight (1980), a mystical allegory about an eccentric fisherman, Pokkuveyil (1981), with a soundtrack by flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and poet Balachandran Chullikkadu in the lead role, Chidambaram (1985), an adaptation of a story by Cheruthuruthy Velappan Sreeraman, Oridathu/ And There Was a Village (1986) and Vasthuhara/ The Dispossessed (1991), based on another Sreeraman story.

He became a leader of "parallel cinema" in Malayalam from Kerala.

Aravindan died in 1991.
