Yuri Ilyenko (Soviet Union, 1936), the Ukrainian cinematographer of Sergei Parajanov/ Paradzanov's Teni Zabytykh Predkov/ Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964), directed the lyrical parable Krynytsya Dlya Sprahlikh/ A Spring for the Thirsty (1965) in Ukraine, written by poet Ivan Drach (and banned until 1987), followed by Vecher na Kanune Ivana Kupaly/ On the Eve of Ivan Kupala (1969), also banned for 20 years. Ilyenko's poetic war movie Bilyi Ptakh z Chornoyu Oznakoyu/ The White Bird Marked with Black (1971) was banned as "the most harmful movie that has ever been made in Ukraine".

Ilyenko moved to Yugoslavia and completed Mechtat i Zhit/ Dream and Live (1974), written with Ivan Mykolaichuk.

Later he directed: Prazdnik Pechyonoy Kartoshki (1978), Poloska Neskoshennych Dikikh Tsvetov (1980), Lisova Pisnia - Mavka (1981), Legenda o Knyagine Olge (1984), based on the legend of an 11th century princess of Kievan Rus, Solomiani dzvony (1988), Swan Lake 'The Zone' (1990), historical movie Molitva za Getmana Mazepu/ A Prayer for Hetman Mazepa (2002). He died of cancer in 2010.
