Korean film-makers Lee Myung-Se has come to prominence thanks to
Nowhere To Hide (1999). The film employs an impressive array of
cinematic techniques. Basically, there are no two scenes that are shot
with the same style. The story itself is not much better than the average
action movie from Hong Kong, although it incorporates elements of 1960s
Italian comedies and of Japanese samurai cinema.
Some gangsters kill a man on the stairs in broad daylight. Woo is a funny and bizarre detective, very determined to accomplish his job, who claims he hasn't seen his wife in ages because he's always out working day and night. Woo is one of the detectives assigned to the case. He and his colleagues look more like punks than officers. Woo decides to start by following a notorious drug trafficker who has just been released from jail, Fish-head. He and his partner Kim track him down in a disco. Fish-head runs through the narrow alleys of the suburbs, chased on foot by Woo. Woo beats him and makes him talk. The next link in the chain is Meathead, who is a strong boxer. Woo pays him a visit. A comic fight ensues, but finally Woo manages to take Meat-head prisoner. At the police station Meathead is "interrogated" (i.e., beaten by everybody) and eventually tortured by Woo who ties him and hangs him like a chicken. Once he decides to collaborate, Woo even takes him to his (badly under-furnished) apartment and offers him food. With Meathead's help, they set a trap for another gangster. The police surrounds the area (yet another dilapidated neighborhood, again in the middle of the night) while they wait for the gangster, Yongbae, to show up. He's a young man with long-hairs who tries to flee but is stopped by Woo. Finally, Yongbae helps the police get to the killer, Sungmin, who is supposed to live with his girlfriend. Woo and other police officers pay her a visit and pretty much crash there waiting for Sungmin to show up. The woman is pretty and elegant, not at all the typical gangster's girl. Sungmin finally shows up, but manages to avoid the police officers. In vain Woo chases him on foot in the usual labyrint of narrow alleys. Sungmin disappears. Woo and Kim continue their hunt. Kim has to kill a man who was threatening a child and is shocked by his own killing. They beat witnesses and torture criminals, but they do not kill. Woo goes to pay a visit to his sister. It is snowing now. We learn that Woo has never married anybody. He lives a lonely existence, and hardly visits his relatives. Days later the police is again on Sungmin's trail. Woo, Kim and the other officers are mixed with the staff of a train. Sungmin is on the train and is avoiding them, but Woo finally recognizes him. A chase ensues that ends with Kim being mortally wounded by Sungmin. Sungmin evelopes in a soldier's uniform. Days later Woo returns to Juyon, Sungmin's girlfriend, and this time succeeds in getting her help. The police is ready when Juyon is waiting for Sungmin in a street, but Sungmin, who has just paid visit to the corpse of him mother, outsmarts them on motorcycle. Woo recognizes him and chases him with the car. Finally they face each other under the rain. Sungmin is stronger, but Woo does not give in. Sungmin wins, but he then realizes that he is surrounded by hundreds of police officers. Woo gets up from the mud. Woo and the other detectives visit Kim, who is in a coma, and bring him the good news. Woo follows Juyon with the car, but Juyon avoids him. |
(Tradotto da Erika Sofi) Il regista coreano Lee Myung-Se e' giunto a un compromesso con Nowhere To Hide (1999). Il film utilizza una vasta gamma di tecniche cinematografiche. In pratica, non vi sono scene girate con lo stesso stile. La storia in se' non e' migliore di quella di un comune film di azione di Hong Kong, ma fonde insieme elementi della commedia italiana anni '60 e del cinema samurai giapponese. Alcuni gangster uccidono un uomo sulle scale in pieno giorno. Woo e' un detective simpatico e bizzarro, molto determinato nello svolgere il suo lavoro, che si lamenta del fatto di non vedere sua moglie da anni perche' giorno e notte e' sempre fuori per lavoro. Woo e' uno dei detective a cui e' stato assegnato il caso. Lui e i suoi colleghi sembrano piu' punk che agenti. Woo decide di iniziare a seguire un noto trafficante di droga appena uscito di galera, Fish-head. Lui e il suo partner Kim lo scovano in una discoteca. Fish-head scappa attraverso i vicoli stretti dei sobborghi, inseguito a piedi da Woo. Woo lo percuote e lo costringe a parlare. Il prossimo anello della catena e' Meathead, un forte boxer. Woo si reca da lui. Segue un buffo combattimento, ma alla fine Woo riesce a farlo prigioniero. Alla stazione di polizia Meathead viene "interrogato" (ovvero, picchiato da tutti) e infine torturato da Woo che lo lega e lo lega come una gallina.Quando si decide a collaborare, Woo lo porta nel suo appartamento (malamente e scarsamente arredato) e gli offre qualcosa da mangiare. Con l'aiuto di Meathead, riescono a tendere una trappola a un altro gangster. La polizia circonda la zona (un altro quartiere degradato, nuovamente nel cuore della notte) in attesa che il gangster, Yongbae, esca allo scoperto. E' un giovane dai capelli lunghi che tenta di fuggire ma viene fermato da Woo. Alla fine, Yongbae aiuta la polizia a catturare il killer, Sungmin, che si pensa viva con la fidanzata. Woo e altri agenti di polizia fanno visita alla donna e restano li' in attesa che Sungmin si faccia vivo. La donna e' bella e di classe, non e' affatto la tipica donna da gangster. Sungmin alla fine arriva, ma riesce a evitare gli agenti di polizia. Woo lo segue invano nel solito labirinto di vicoli stretti. Sungmin scompare. Woo e Kim continuano la caccia. Kim e' costratto a uccidere un uomo che sta minacciando un bambino e ne rimane scioccato. Percuotono i testimoni e torturano i criminali, ma non uccidono. Woo va a trovare sua sorella. Nevica. Si sa che Woo non si e' mai sposato. Vive la sua esistenza in solitudine, e raramente fa visita ai suoi parenti. Dopo qualche giorno e' di nuovo sulle tracce Sungmin. Woo, Kim e altri agenti si confondono con il personale del treno. Sungmin e' su quel treno e cerca di evitarli, ma Woo alla fine lo riconosce. Inizia un inseguimento e Kim viene ferito mortalmente da Sungmin. Sungmin indossa un'uniforme da soldato. Dopo qualche giorno Woo ritorna da Juyon, la fidanzata di Sungmin, e questa volta riesce a ottenere il suo aiuto. La polizia e' pronta a intervenire mentre Juyon aspetta Sungmin sulla strada, ma Sungmin, che e' appena tornato dalla veglia funebre di sua madre , li supera a bordo di una motocicletta. Woo lo riconosce e lo insegue in auto. Alla fine si trovano faccia a faccia sotto la pioggia. Sungmin e' piu' forte, ma Woo non si arrende. Sungmin ha la meglio, ma poi si accorge di essere circondato da un centinaio di agenti di polizia.Woo si rialza dal fango. Woo e altri detective fanno visita a Kim, che e' in coma, per portargli buone notizie. Woo segue Juyon in auto, ma Juyon riesce a evitarlo. |
