Susan Seidelman (USA, 1952) debuted with
Smithereens (1982).
Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), scripted by Leora Barish,
is a screwball comedy with a feminist message, based on an old-fashioned swap
of identities, and set in the milieu of the Lower East Side.
Roberta is the uptight and bored housewife of successful businessman
Gary. They live in a big house with a swimming pool. Given Gary's cold and
distracted behavior, Roberta's only entertainment is reading the "personals"
in the newspaper. She gets fascinated by the messages left by a man (Jim) who is
"desperately seeking Susan".
There seems to be mystery and romance involved. Eventually, she decides to show
up at an appointment and meet her fantasy heroine.
The tv is reporting that the mob has stolen some precious earrings from
a museum.
Susan is just about the opposite of Roberta: a wild and liberated woman
dressed in a
cheap and provocative fashion. Susan has just stolen two earrings from a man
she slept with in a hotel room, and barely missed the gangster who was coming
to redeem them. The gangster did not see her face, only her jacket.
On her way to the appointment, Susan stops at a club where a magician performs
a trick helped by a clumsy girl (Susan's best friend).
Susan reads in
the newspaper that a mobster was killed, pushed out the
window of a hotel room: he's the man she just slept with.
Roberta spies the two lovers when they meet.
Jim is in a rock band and is leaving for a tour. He gives Susan the phone number
of his best friend Dez in case she needs a place to stay.
Roberta follows Susan and even buys the punkish jacket that Susan sells to
get some boots.
By the time
Susan realizes that she forgot a key in that jacket, a key that opens the
locker where she left all her belongings, it's too late.
But Roberta has found the key and would like to return it, so she puts an
ad in the paper "desperately seeking Susan" and giving her an appointment.
Jim reads the ad and worries that it could be some gangster trying to
locate Susan. So he calls Dez (who works in a cinema) and asks him to check
that Susan is not in danger. Dez has never met Susan in person, so Jim tells
him to look for a blonde in a strange-looking jacket.
It turns out the gangster of the hotel is on
the scene and sees what he believes to be Susan (because of the jacket).
Susan cannot meet Roberta because she gets arrested for not having paid the
cab. The gangster grabs Roberta. Dez, noticing the jacket, runs to help her
out. The gangster runs, but Roberta falls and hits her head.
When Roberta wakes up, she doesn't remember who she is.
Dez needs to go back to his job but the girl, whom he calls Susan, is clearly
confused. So he accompanies her to the locker,
where she finds Susan's things, including the earrings.
Roberta still doesn't remember anything.
Dez needs to go back to his job, but Roberta/Susan is clearly lost, so he
offers her to stay at his place. He's clearly a nice, kind man with a heart
of gold. But he is not lucky: his girlfriend just broke up with him and
took all the furniture with her.
Susan, released from jail, finds out that the locker is empty.
In the meantime, Gary reports his wife missing. He is worried but not too much.
His sister preaches that he has not been a good husband, not caring for Roberta
and having an affair with another woman.
Roberta is now living the life of Susan simply because everything tells her
that she must be Susan.
In order to get back her memory, she follows a clue and gets to Susan's
favorite night club, where she gets hired as the new helper to the magician.
The gangster has tracked her down and the night of her (clumsy) debut he
stalks her and hits her. The police saves Roberta's life but not before she
falls on the ground and loses her senses again. When she awakes, she remembers
who she is, but, alas, the police are taking her to jail thinking she must be
a prostitute.
Gary finds the address of the pawnshop where Roberta bought the jacket and
gets in touch with Susan. Susan takes advantage of his hospitality while
promising to help him find the vanished wife. When Roberta
calls from jail, it's Susan who picks up the phone and Roberta hangs up
thinking her husband is already partying with another woman.
Roberta, depressed and lonely, calls Dez, who accepts to bail her out.
They walk back together to his place but find that the place has been
searched by someone and Roberta suspects it's the gangster who is looking
for the earrings. Poor Dez is fed up and would like Roberta (whom he still
believes to be Susan) to get out of his life. But, instead, they end up
making love.
While guesting uninvited at Gary's place, Susan figures out what is happening:
the mob stole the earrings, Susan took them, the gangster came to redeem them,
Susan's client could not find them, the gangster threw him out of the window
and is now chasing Roberta (whom he believes to be Susan) to get back the
earrings.
From Roberta's diary, Susan finds out about her passion for "desperately
seeking Susan" personals and gives her an appointment at the club.
Roberta and Dez are waken up by a noise. Dez hits the intruder on the head
but it turns out to be Jim in person. When Jim recovers, Dez confesses that
he slept with Susan. Except that now she has disappeared again.
At the club Jim realizes that Dex's Susan is not "his" Susan.
But the real Susan is there, waiting for Roberta, and has taken with her
Gary and his sister.
So Jim and Susan finally meet. Roberta appears on stage.
Roberta's husband and his sister are shocked seeing Roberta dressed in
miniskirt help the magician. At another table the gangster waits for his
chance.
As she is inside the magician's box, the gangster steals Roberta's wig.
Both Gary and Dez help Roberta out of the box and Roberta introduces
them. Dez finally realizes that she is not Susan.
On his way out,
the gangster finds Jim and Susan making love in the basement and takes
Susan hostage.
In the meantime, Roberta says goodbye to Gary, who has a hard time believing
that she really means it. Minutes later the gangster breaks into Roberta's
dressing room, still holding Susan hostage, and Roberta smashes a bottle on
his head. She has captured the gangster, and finally met her heroine, Susan.
Now she is a free woman, she has found her real self, and, of course, she
goes back to Dez.

Cercasi Susan disperatamente (1985), sceneggiatura di Leora Barish.
E' una commedia dell'assurdo dal messaggio femminista, basata su un classico scambio di identita' ed
ambientata nell'East Side newyorkese.
Roberta e' una casalinga insoddisfatta ed annoiata, moglie di un uomo d'affari di successo, Gary. I due
coniugi vivono in una grande casa con piscina. Gary ha un atteggiamento freddo e distratto, quindi l'unico
passatempo che rimane a Roberta e' quello di leggere gli annunci personali del giornale. Resta affascinata
dal me! ssaggio "Cercasi Susan disperatamente", lasciato da un uomo di nome Jim, perche' sembra trattarsi
di una storia romantica e misteriosa. Decide di andare all'appuntamento e di incontrare quella che nella sua
fantasia e' gia' diventata un'eroina.
La TV intanto annuncia che la mafia ha rubato dei preziosi orecchini da un museo.
Susan e' l'esatto contrario di Roberta: una donna emancipata e fuori dagli schemi, vestita in modo
provocatorio e a buon mercato. Inoltre, ha appena rubato un paio d'orecchini ad un uomo col quale ha
passato la notte in una camera d'albergo. Manca per un soffio il gangster che sta andando a ritirarli, il quale
non la vede in viso ma non puo' non notare la sua giacca. Sulla strada che la porta all'appuntamento con
Jim, Susan si ferma in un club dove un tale si esibisce in un numero di magia, assistito da una ragazza
sbadata e pasticciona (la migliore amica di Susan). Susan legge in un giornale che un mafioso e' st! ato
ucciso, spinto dalla finestra di una stanza d'albergo: e' l'uomo con cui lei ha passato la notte.
Roberta spia i due amanti, ormai giunti al loro appuntamento. Jim suona in un gruppo rock e sta per partire
per un tour. Da' a Susan il numero di telefono del suo migliore amico, Dez, nel caso in cui lei avesse
bisogno di un posto in cui stare.
Roberta si mette a seguire Susan nei suoi spostamenti, e compra addirittura la giacca stile punk che questa
vende per comprarsi degli stivali.
Susan si rende conto di aver lasciato nella giacca la chiave dell'armadietto in cui aveva riposto tutte le sue
cose, ma e' troppo tardi.
Roberta intanto trova la chiave e vorrebbe restituirla, cosi' mette un annuncio sul giornale, un altro "Cercasi
Susan disperatamente", dandole appuntamento. Lo legge anche Jim, e preoccupato del fatto che potrebbe
averlo scritto il gangster che cerca di rintracciarla, chiede a ! Dez (il quale lavora in un cinema) di
controllare che Susan non sia in pericolo. Dez non l'ha mai vista di persona, e quindi Jim gli dice di cercare
una bionda con una giacca dallo strano aspetto.
Accade che anche il gangster dell'albergo si trova all'appuntamento e vede quella che lui crede essere
Susan (per via della giacca). La vera Susan intanto viene arrestata per non aver pagato il taxi, quindi non
riesce ad incontrare Roberta. Il gangster rapisce Roberta. Dez, avendo anche lui notato la giacca, corre in
suo aiuto e fa scappare il gangster, ma Roberta cade e batte la testa.
Quando si sveglia, non ricorda piu' chi e'. Dez deve tornare al suo lavoro ma la ragazza, che lui
naturalmente chiama Susan, e' evidentemente confusa, cosi' lui la accompagna all'armadietto dove sono le
cose della vera Susan, compresi gli orecchini. Roberta continua a non ricordare niente. Dez non puo' piu'
tardare a tornare al lavoro, ma Roberta/Susan e' chiaramen! te persa, e cosi' lui si offre di farla stare a casa
sua. Dez e' molto simpatico, un uomo gentile e dal cuore d'oro. Ma non fortunato: la sua ragazza l'ha
appena lasciato, portandosi via l'intero arredamento dell'appartamento.
Susan, che intanto e' uscita di prigione, scopre che l'armadietto e' vuoto.
Nel frattempo, Gary denuncia la scomparsa di sua moglie. E' preoccupato, ma non troppo. Sua sorella gli
fa la predica sul fatto che non e' stato un buon marito, che non si e' preso abbastanza cura di Roberta, e gli
rimprovera di averla tradita con un'altra donna.
Roberta si ritrova a vivere la vita di Susan, semplicemente perche' l'evidenza l'ha convinta di essere lei. Per
riuscire a recuperare la memoria, segue un indizio e si ritrova nel night club preferito di Susan, dove viene
assunta come nuova assistente del prestigiatore.
Il gangster nel frattempo l'ha rintracciata, e la sera del suo debutto come assi! stente (anche lei da
pasticciona) si apposta e la colpisce. La polizia riesce a salvarle la vita, ma non prima che sia caduta in terra
ed abbia di nuovo perso i sensi. Quando si sveglia si ricorda finalmente chi e' ma, ahime', dei poliziotti la
stanno portando in prigione perche' la credono una prostituta.
Gary riesce a trovare l'indirizzo del monte dei pegni dove Roberta ha comprato la giacca e riesce a mettersi
in contatto con Susan, la quale approfitta della sua ospitalita' continuando a promettergli di aiutarlo a
trovare la moglie scomparsa. Quando Roberta gli telefona dalla prigione, e' Susan a rispondere al telefono,
e Roberta chiude indispettita credendo che il marito se la stia gia' spassando con un'altra donna.
Roberta, sola e depressa, chiama Dez, il quale accetta di pagarle la cauzione. Tornano insieme a casa di lui,
ma trovano che l'appartamento e' stato perquisito da qualcuno e Roberta sospetta si tratti del gangster che!
sta cercando gli orecchini. Il povero Dez non ne puo' piu' e vorrebbe che Roberta (che lui crede ancora
essere Susan) uscisse per sempre dalla sua vita. Ed invece, finiscono per fare l'amore.
Mentre continua a soggiornare (non piu' desiderata) a casa di Gary, Susan capisce cosa sta succedendo: la
mafia ha rubato gli orecchini, Susan li ha presi, il gangster e' venuto a ritirarli ma il cliente di Susan non e'
riuscito a trovarli, cosi' il gangster l'ha gettato dalla finestra ed ora sta cercando Roberta (perche' la crede
Susan) per riprendersi gli orecchini.
Leggendo il diario di Roberta, Susan scopre la sua passione per gli annunci che si scrivono lei e Jim, cosi' le
da' appuntamento al solito club.
Roberta e Dez si svegliano perche' hanno sentito un rumore. Dez colpisce l'intruso in testa, che poi si
scopre essere Jim. Quando riprende i sensi, Dez gli confessa di aver fatto l'amore con Susan (non sapendo
che in rea! lta' si tratta di Roberta), la quale pero' e' scomparsa ancora.
Al club Jim capisce che la Susan di cui parla Dez non e' la "sua" Susan. Anche la vera Susan intanto si trova
al club, aspettando che Roberta arrivi al loro appuntamento. Si e' portata dietro anche Gary e sua sorella.
Cosi' Jim e Susan finalmente riescono ad incontrarsi. Roberta compare sul palco, e sia suo marito che la
sorella rimangono scioccati dalla vista di lei in minigonna, intenta a fare l'assistente del prestigiatore. Seduto
ad un altro tavolo, intanto, il gangster attende il momento giusto.
Non appena entra nella scatola del mago, il gangster ruba la parrucca di Roberta. La aiutano ad uscire dalla
scatola sia Gary che Dez, e Roberta fa le presentazioni. Finalmente Dez capisce che non si tratta di Susan.
Uscendo, il gangster trova Jim e SUsan che fanno l'amore nello scantinato e prende Susan in ostaggio.
Nel frattempo, Roberta dice ! addio a Gary, il quale non riesce a credere che la moglie lo stia lasciando
davvero. Pochi minuti piu' tardi il gangster irrompe nel camerino di Roberta, con Susan ancora ostaggio.
Roberta gli rompe una bottiglia in testa. Cosi' cattura il cattivo e soprattutto riesce finalmente ad incontrare
la sua eroina, Susan.
Ora e' una donna libera, ha trovato la vera se stessa e, naturalmente, torna tra le braccia di Dez.
