Kirill Serebrennikov (Russia, 1969), one of Russia's most influential
theater directors of the 2000s and originally a
protege' of Putin's regime, debuted in cinema with
Razdetyye/ Undressed (1998), from the Catalan playwright Joan Casas,
and
Ragin (2004), from Anton Chekhov.
He then adapted two plays by the Presnyakov brothers (playwrights Oleg and Vladimir):
Postelnye Stseny/ Bad Bed Stories (2005), photographed by Sergey Astakhov, and especially Izobrazhaya Zhertvu/ Playing the Victim (2006), photographed by Sergey Mokritskiy.
He teamed up with important screenwriters for Yurev Den/ Yuri's Day (2008), written by Yuri Arabov (Alexander Sokurov's screenwriter between 1978 and 2011) and photographed by Oleg Lukichyov, and Izmena/ Betrayal (2012), written by Natalya Nazarova and photographed by Oleg Lukichyov. In 2014 he criticized Putin's annexation of Crimea and in 2017 the government arrested him on trumped-up charges of fraud. He was able to direct Uchenik/ The Student (2016), an adaptation of Marius von Mayenburg's play "Maertyrer", and especially the musical Leto/ Summer (2018), about the Leningrad underground rock scene of the early 1980s, photographed by Vladislav Opelyants, as well as Petrovy v Grippe/ Petrov's Flu (2021), adapted from Alexey Salnikov's best-selling novel. Zhena Chaikovskogo/ Tchaikovsky's Wife (2022) was the rare original screen play, photographed by Vladislav Opelyants, followed by Limonov - The Ballad (2024), adapted from Emmanuel Carrere's fictional memoir of a Soviet punk poet, and photographed by Roman Vasyanov.
