Aleksey Uchitel (Russia, 1951) emerged with documentaries like Obvodny Channel (1990) and debuted in live-action cinema with the biopic Gisele's Mania/ Manija Zhizeli (1996), followed by the stylish biopic Dnevnik Ego Zheny/ His Wife’s Diary (2000), about writer Ivan Bunin, which began his collaboration with cinematographer Yuriy Klimenko. The duo then made: Progulka/ The Stroll (2003), Kosmos kak Predchuvstvie/ Dreaming of Space (2005), written by Aleksandr Mindadze, possibly his best, Plenyy/ Captive (2008), adapted from Vladimir Makanin's novel "Caucasian Captive", Kray/ The Edge (2010), Break Loose (2013), Matilda (2017), Tsoi (2020), etc.
