Aleksey Uchitel (Russia, 1951) emerged with
documentaries like Obvodny Channel (1990) and debuted in
live-action cinema with the
biopic Gisele's Mania/ Manija Zhizeli (1996), followed by the
stylish biopic Dnevnik Ego Zheny/ His Wife’s Diary (2000), about writer Ivan Bunin, which began his collaboration with cinematographer Yuriy Klimenko.
