Penmetsa Ram Gopal Varma (India, 1962) debuted with Telugu-language movies: the gangster movie Siva (1989), basically a remake of Bruce Lee's martial-arts movie The Way of the Dragon (1972), the road movie Kshana Kshanam (1991), the political thriller Gaayam/ The Wound (1993), inspired by Mario Puzo's novel "The Godfather" (1972), and Govinda Govinda (1993).

He switched to Hindi for the comedy Rangeela (1995), the horror Deyyam (1996) and the road movies Anaganaga Oka Roju (1997) and Daud (1997).

The political thriller became his specialty with the "gangster trilogy" of Satya (1998), Company (2002) and (a decade later) Satya 2 (2013).

Meanwhile, he also scripted Eeshwar Niva's Shool (1999).

For a while he directed mostly thrillers: Kaun (1999), Jungle (2000), Ab Tak Chhappan (2004), Madhyanam Hathya (2004), Shiva (2006), Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007), Dongala Mutha (2011), Not a Love Story (2011), Department (2012), etc. But also two romantic comedies: Prema Katha (1999) and Mast (1999).

In the 21st century he directed many horror movies: Bhoot (2003), Darling (2007), Phoonk (2008), Agyaat (2009), Bhoot Returns (2012), Ice Cream (2014), Anukshanam (2014), Ice Cream 2 (2014), 12 'O' Clock (2021), etc.
