Aleksandr Zeldovich (Russia, 1958) debuted with shorts like Nochiu po Gorodu/ At Night Through the City (1983), Mayva/ The Kids (1984) and Voitelnitsa/ The Amazon (1986). He formed a team with screenwriter Vladimir Sorokin and cinematographer Aleksandr Ilkhovskiy to make Zakat/ Sunset (1990), a loose adaptation of Tolstoy’s "Anna Karenina", and Moskva/ Moscow (2000), possibly Ilkhovsky's visual masterpiece. Zima Vesna (2004) was instead written by Zeldovich himself and photographed by Aleksey Fyodorov. Ilkhovskiy returned for Mishen/ Target (2011) and Medea (2021).
