Technically speaking, more than one language is covered by this timeline. The ancient Persian of the Achaemenid Empire was an Indo-European language closely related to Sanskrit and Avestan (the language of Zoroaster) and written in a cuneiform script. During the Sassanian period ancient Persian language evolved into Pahlavi or Parthian or Parsi. In the 7th century Islam forced the Iranians to adopt the Arabic script and Parsi evolved into Farsi. Farsi was also adopted in some Muslim courts of the Indian subcontinent: their major writers are listed here as "Persian" writers.

"Poems" refers to a combination of "Qasida/ Odes", "Masnavi/ Narrative verse", "Ghazal/ Mystical lyric", "Rubai/ Quatrains". When a poet specialized only in one genre of poetry, that genre is indicated.

See Steve Moore: "The Novel" for synopses of the ancient narratives (whether in verse or prose).

The dates of ancient works are obviously wildly approximate.
