Hobson reiterates his theory (see Hobson, Allan: THE CHEMISTRY OF CONSCIOUS STATES) that the "mind" is a dynamic balancing act between the chemical systems that regulate waking and dreaming (respectively, the "aminergic" and the "cholinergic" systems). Conscious states fluctuate continuously between waking and dreaming. Conscious life is not so much a zero-one phenomenon (either conscious or not) but a continuum of states that correspond to hypnosis, daydreaming, delirium, etc. The novelty of this book is that Hobson points to the similar chemical contents of the states of dreaming and psychosis/delirium. Why certainly a popular subject, it adds very little to his contributions to the understanding of dreaming. |
