The American biologist Scott Turner expands on Dawkins' theory of the "extended phenotype" by discussing how organisms turn the environment into a set of additional organs. By resorting to thermodynamics, hydrodynamics and electrical engineering, Turner provides a very detailed account of how some animals exploit the environment to complement their bodily functions. Therefore, it is not clear what constitutes the "border" of an organism. |
