The Nature of Spacetime

According to Relativity, everything sits in spacetime. According to Relativity, spacetime is not a substance. Sound waves require a medium to travel in (and their speed depends on the medium), but light waves do not require any medium (and it is always the same). According to Einstein, light travels in vacuum. There is no need for an “ether”.

In 1981 the Canadian physicist William Unruh proved the stunning similarity between sound waves propagating in moving fluid and light waves propagating in curved spacetime. In 1999 the US physicist Ted Jacobson speculated that spacetime might indeed be a “substance”, a kind of fluid (and be discrete at the microscopic scale).
