This is a wonderful and informative book, that describes how the USA became
the USA. It analyzes changes in ordinary lives as well as inventions and
politics. One of the best books ever written on the USA.
Highly recommended.
You'll find out that people thought Drake's idea of drilling for oil was
ridiculous, that Thomas Jefferson predicted it would take a thousand years
for the frontier to reach the Pacific Ocean, that fast food was a consequence
of the Civil War,
how John Deere's steel plow or Eli Whitney's cotton gin changed the face of
the Earth, how scheduled passenger ships came to be, why Americans prefer
showers to baths and why Americans like ice in their drinks.
And how one invention led to another one, in an endless cycle of Darwinian
selection and evolution.
