Ironically it is really difficult to decide how many independent countries there are in the world because different countries and agencies recognize different countries. For example, i recognize Taiwan, Somaliland and Palestine and i used to recognize Tibet before everybody abandoned it, and i come up with 198 independent countries. The Vatican is recognized by almost every country in the world but it is not represented at the United Nations. The US State Department recognizes 194 independent countries, but it does not include Taiwan (so much for your closest allies), nor Somaliland nor Palestine. Russia and Serbia do not recognize Kosovo. The United Nations has 192 members. Turkey recognizes half of Cyprus as independent and Russia recognizes all sorts of separatists as independent. I still have to see the following independent countries:
  • America: Suriname,
  • Asia: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Iraq, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Timor-Leste,
  • Africa: Algeria, Angola, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Liberia, Libya, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan,
  • Europe: Belarus,
  • Oceania: Nauru, Palau, Tuvalu,

And just to avoid that some of these missing countries acquire the status of "rarity": some of them i didn't see because of difficulty, and some i didn't see simply because i've never been curious to see them.
