Warning. This highway is famous for its beautiful coastal views, but they are rarely to be seen between march and october. The postcards and brochures that you see are almost invariably pictures taken in winter. There is thick fog along highway 1 for most of the year. If no fog, then wild, cold wind. Same weather as San Francisco. Best is to visit in winter.

  • Esalen Institute and hot springs (famous hot springs overlooking the ocean, popular with aging hippy crowd that bath naked and open to the public only late at night)

  • Sand Dollar Beach
  • Jade Cove (trailhead located off highway 1 across from milestone 13.50, about 400 meters south of Plaskett Creek Campground and just before a big left bend in the highway)
