The Soul Stirrers, that relocated from Texas to Chicago in 1936, were one
of the first gospel quartets to feature a solo vocalist,
Rebert Harris, the author of Walk Around (1939) and the first gospel
vocalist to sing in a falsetto register.
After By And By (1950), Harris was replaced by the young
Sam Cooke, who contributed Be With Me Jesus (1955)
and Touch the Hem Of His Garment (1956).
In his solo career, Sam Cooke (born in Mississippi)
used his crisp melismatic tenor to deliver Bumps Blackwell's You Send Me (1957), one of the biggest hits of the era, and some of the most imitated ballads of the pop-soul genre:
Only Sixteen (1959), written by Lou Adler under the moniker Barbara Campbell,
Lou Adler's Wonderful World (1960),
and then, after producers Hugo & Luigi adopted him,
Twistin' The Night Away (1961),
Cupid (1961),
Bring It On Home To Me (1962),
Another Saturday Night (1963),
the prophetic A Change Is Gonna Come (1964).
He was killed (in december 1964) by a woman he had tried to rape.

Sam Cooke
soave in canzoni gospel come
You Send Me (1957), un capolavoro di melisma,
Only Sixteen (1959),
Chain Gang (1960),
Wonderful World (1960),
Cupid (1961),
Twistin The Night Away (1961),
Bring It On Home To Me (1962),
Another Saturday Night (1963),
la profezia di A Change Is Gonna Come (1964),
prima di essere
assassinato (nel dicembre del 1964) da una donna che aveva cercato di violentare.
Da lui ha origine tutto il canto nero soffice e sentimentale.
