Sonny (Bono) & Cher (Sarkisian), a sentimental and eccentric couple, had two huge hits: I Got You Babe (1965), with Hal Blaine on drums, and Bang Bang (1966). The former is typical of folk rock: starting with a Byrdsian guitar riff, a melodic harpsichord line is intertwined with a chiming guitar, overlaid by an epic and ecstatic vocal duet.
Sonny Bono would go into politics, dying in 1998 due to a skiing accident. Cher would go on to become a Hollywood actress, a star of pop music (Gypsys, Tramps &
Thieves, 1971) and even disco (Believe), with her strong and androgynous singing register.
