Without the publicity orchestrated for their first album, few people would have
ever heard of the Moby Grape. They came out of the San Francisco
acid-rock scene with a song-oriented sound that almost reneged on everything
that scene was doing.

Moby Grape were formed by Alexander "Skip" Spence (who switched from drums to rhythm guitar) after his divorce from Jefferson Airplane. Launched with a pompous hype on the wave of the hippie phenomenon, Moby Grape debuted in June 1967 with an album of eight songs. The album tried to appeal to hippies, with eclectic and eccentric songs such as Hey Grandma , Fall On You , As In The Morning , Changes. It was an album of songs, in a period in which acid-rock was producing its most daring experiments .
The group was in reality a shrewd invention. The five Moby Grape ( veteran blues and folk ) had little to do with the hippies. Their five-part vocal harmonies were certainly original , but they seemed to belong to the world of doo-wop , or at least to that of the Beatles.
Spence also played on Wow ( Columbia, 1968), equally if not more eccentric than the first album ( the boogie-woogie with swirling baroque horns of Can't Be So Bad ), but especially containing an entire bonus album with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper.
The rest recycles other people's songs, more or less illustrious, in jazz , blues country, telling the happenings of the flower children .
Alexander Spence had yet to give his masterpiece, which came with his only solo album , Oar (1969), recorded in a single day playing all the instruments. That collection of ballads is a kind of psychedelic space blues and country plan that had few precedents (Diana , War In Peace ), which culminates in the surreal trance Grey / Afro.
Spence will sadly end up as his British counterpart, Syd Barrett, destroyed by mental disorders. Twenty years later they will release a song recorded in 1972 , All My Life ( Sundazed , 2000) that appears to be close to the sound of the Beatles.
The rest of the group reformed briefly to record mediocre country-rock album.

I Moby Grape vennero formati da Alexander "Skip" Spence (passato dalla batteria

esordirono nel giugno 1967 con Moby Grape, un album-affronto otto
canzoni del quale vennero pubblicate anche come 45 giri per confondere i
disc jockeys.
Sull'album figurava uno
degli anni dell'estate degli hippy, Omaha,
accanto a canzoni eclettiche ed eccentriche come
Hey Grandma, Fall On You, Come In The Morning,
Changes (da suonare a 78 RPM).
Era un album di canzoni, in un periodo in cui l'acid-rock stava producendo i
suoi esperimenti piu` arditi.
Il gruppo era in realta` un'accorta invenzione discografica. I cinque Moby
Grape (veterani blues e folk, con moglie e figli) avevano
poco a che vedere con gli hippies dell'Haight-Ashbury.
Le loro armonie vocali in cinque parti erano certamente originali, ma sembravano
appartenere al mondo del doo-wop, o al massimo a quello dei Beatles.
A Monterey vennero sonaramente fischiati dalla folla.
Spence suono` ancora su Wow (Columbia, 1968), altrettanto se non piu`
eccentrico del primo (the swirling boogie-woogie with baroque horns of Can't Be So Bad), ma soprattutto contenente
un intero bonus album con la storica
Grape Jam con Mike Bloomfield e Al Kooper (in particolare
Marmalade e Black Current Jam, perche' il resto ricicla brani
altrui o brani dell'altro album),
un'ingenua festa improvvisata fra amici piu` o meno
illustri che trasferi` in campo jazz, blues e country
gli happening dei figli dei fiori.
Alexander Spence doveva ancora dare il suo capolavoro, che venne con il suo
unico disco solista, Oar (1969), registrato in un giorno solo suonando
tutti gli strumenti da se`. Quella raccolta di ballate psichedeliche
fondo` un genere di space blues e space country che aveva pochi precedenti
(Diana, War In Peace) e che culmina nella trance surreale di
Grey/Afro.
Spence finira` purtroppo come il suo corrispettivo britannico, Syd Barrett,
distrutto da squilibri mentali (Spence viveva gia` in un sanatorium quando
registro` l'album a Nashville). Vent'anni dopo verra` pubblicato un brano
registrato nel 1972, All My Life (Sundazed, 2000) che sembra dei Beatles.
Il resto del gruppo si riformo` un po' di volte per registrare album di mediocre
country-rock:
