Mickey Newbury was part of the legion of Texas singer-songwriters that
greatly expanded the format of country music. He wrote a number of hits for
country-pop singers before releasing his first solo work,
Harlequin Melodies (RCA, 1968), which was followed by his masterpiece,
Looks Like Rain (1969).
Frisco Mabel Joy (1971) contains his most successful recording,
the American Trilogy.
Heaven Help the Child (1973) concluded his creative phase, as
I Came To Hear The Music (Elektra, 1974) and
Lovers (Elektra, 1975) were vastly inferior.
He died in 2002 of emphysema.
An American Trilogy (Drag City, 2011) collects
Looks Like Rain,
Frisco Mabel Joy and
Heaven Help the Child.
