Oltre che aver aiutato Michael Hurley a realizzare il
leggendario Have Moicy! (july 1975 -1976), il misterioso
Jeffrey Frederick (che aveva formato i Clamtones in Vermont alla fine degli
anni '60 e si era trasferito a Portland nel 1975)
e` autore di uno dei capolavori della scuola "acid-folk":
Spiders In The Moonlight (Rounder, 1977 - Frederick, 2007).
Fra scoppiettanti arrangiamenti
gospel (Let Me Down), ragtime (Lazy Bones), dixieland
(Window), marce (Rosebud), barrelhouse (Juanita),
boogie (Toilet), calypso (Beer Shits),
honky-tonk (Oh Me Oh My) e western swing (Rotten Lettuce)
che rievocano atmosfere da saloon d'epoca, infarcite di spirito buontempone e
con i testi piu` esilaranti del mondo, si fa largo una visione dell'umanita'
ancor piu` demente di quella di Hurley.
Frederick scorazza con il suo yodel gutturale in quell'accozzaglia di fiati
(Ted Deane), piano (Richard Tyler), violino (Robin Remailly), coriste
(Jill Gross), basso (David Reisch) e batteria (Willie North) che costituisce
uno dei piu` grandi complessi di country-rock di sempre: i Clamtones.

The Clamtones mutated into the Rounders when Steve Weber of the
Holy Modal Rounders joined.
Unfinished Business (Phantasy Productions, 2000),
Live at the Ice House (Frederick Productions, 2002), that documents
a 1991 performance, and
Ooh la la... Les Clams (Frederick Productions, 2003)
document his last period.
Frederick died in 1997 of liver failure.
Clamtones B.C. (Frederick Productions, 2005) is a
2-CD set of live tracks from a 1976 tour.
