Bobby Brown, originally a member of Boston vocal trio New Edition (with Michael Bivins and Ricky Bell), fused urban soul with hip-hop to create
"new jack swing", a style originally pioneered by Teddy Riley.
His first solo album, King of Stage (1987), was rather insignificant, but
Don't Be Cruel (1988), produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface, introduced
the new style to the broad audience of urban soul.
Bobby (1992) failed to sustain the interest, as others were doing the
same thing better.
Married to Whitney Houston but arrested at least six times, and a notorious
drug and alcohol addict, Brown became a tabloid celebrity.
Brown died in 2020.
