Ludus era un work-shop multimediale di Manchester fondato dalla grafica,
poetessa underground e cantante sperimentale Linder Sterling,
dal video-artista "Birrer" e dal polistrumentista Ian Devine.
e che si esprimeva con un suono disarticolato, venato
di swing e funk (I Can't Swim I Have Nightmares, 1980, sul primo EP;
il singolo My Cherry Is In Sherry, 1981) e frequenti richiami al
free jazz e al Canterbury sound (Mirror Mirror, 1981;
Breaking The Rules, 1983).
Il loro tema prediletto era quello del feticismo sessuale.
Gli album del periodo storico, che facevano seguito all'EP The Visit (1980), sono The Seduction (New Hormones, 1981), originariamente edito come due EP, e Danger Came Smiling (New Hormones, 1982), ma poi uscira` ancora un EP Nue Au Soleil (Interior, 1988). Devine lavorera` poi con Allison Statton. Devine e Sterling (ormai divenuta un'affermata attrice performance) si riuniranno per allestire il requiem Clint Eastwood, Claire Offreduccio and Me (Land Land, 2001) in un monastero di Manchester.
