Shahid Parvez
(1958) of the Etawah Gharana was one of the most creative sitar players to emerge out of India in the 1980s.
His astronomical crescendos of cascading melodies are relatively traditional
in nature, but his agonizing alap, with sudden bursts of dissonance, and his
general passion for sound effects and detours, place him in a class of his own.
When he plays the sitar in a melodic way, he evokes jazz guitarists.
When he litters the raga with jarring sounds, he resembles a Jimi Hendrix of the sitar.
