Los Angeles-based Pharcyde, formed by rappers Imani Wilcox,
Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson, Tre "Slimkid" Hardson and
Derrick "Fat Lip" Stewart,
released a surreal light-hearted fresco of the ghetto,
Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (Delicious Vinyl, 1993), which stood up
in the age of gangsta-rap's doom and gloom.
However, LabCabinCalifornia (Delicious Vinyl, 1995) tried to mix rap and
pop in a rather straightforward manner: it is merely funny, whereas the debut was lunatic.
Plain Rap (2001) was a jazzier album, probably the most musical of the three.
Only two of the original members were left on
Humboldt Beginnings (2004):
Wilcox and Robinson.
