2Pac is the second alias of Tupac Shakur (born Lesane Parish Crooks), the
former member of
Digital Underground
who adopted the gangsta-rap aesthetic
for 2Pacalypse Now (Interscope, 1991) and
Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. (Interscope, 1993), with
I Get Around and Keep Your Head Up.
He also formed the group Thug Life, which recorded Volume 1 (1994).
His most powerful album was
Me Against the World (Interscope, 1995), produced by Sam Bostic,
released while he was in
jail for a sexual assault. Both gloomy and explosive, it covered a vast spectrum
of styles, from homicidal to sensitive, while remaining true to the gangster persona.
Several songs reference death
(If I Die 2Nite, Death Around the Corner, So Many Tears).
Much of the anger and fear gone, 2Pac adopted a more "domestic" stance on the
uneven All Eyez on Me (Interscope, 1996),
the first double album of hip-hop music, produced by Dr Dre, Mike Mosley and
many others (California Love, Can't C Me).
He also released
Makaveli's The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (Death Row, 1996)
and Tupac Shakur's The Rose That Grew From Concrete (Interscope, 2000),
besides 2Pac's
R U Still Down? (Jive, 1997) and
Until the End of Time (Interscope, 2001).
He was shot dead in 1996.
