Smash Mouth were formed in San Jose by singer Steve Harwell and guitarist Greg Camp. Their debut album Fush Yu Mang (Interscope, 1997) mostly offers uninspired rock and roll played with the nonchalance of rich spoiled California kids, but the ultra-catchy ska number Walkin' On The Sun made them an overnight sensation. The solid pop arrangement of Astro Lounge (Interscope, 1999) projects the band in a different sphere. All Star, Then The Morning Comes, Diggin' Your Scene boast impeccable melodies and a baroque sound that recall the heydays of psychedelia, while Waste showed the adult, sentimental side of the songwriters. Smash Mouth (Interscope, 2002) and Get the Picture (2003) were far less original and even less ambitious (You Are My Number One).
