Tsar are a Los Angeles quartet that serves the worst aspects of Brit-pop
with a tad of additional energy and frenzy.
Their debut Tsar (Hollywood, 2000) has two souls, part cheap imitation
of Oasis ( Calling All Destroyers,
Disappear)
and part legitimate child of California's power-pop school
(the roaring I Don't Wanna Break-Up, the frantic and driving
Kathy Fong Is The Bomb).
Tsar's eclectic collection also features
intriguing power-ballads (Silver Shifter), a
hard-rock epic a` la Guns'n'Roses (Teen Wizards), a
punk-rock spasm (Afradio) and a touch of
Devo's demented rock and roll
(Monostereo).
Despite the derivative approach, Tsar inherits the jovial temper of
Toad The Wet Sprocket and, further back in time,
Beat, Last and
Plimsouls.
What is missing is only a sense of purpose...
