Swedish heavy-metal outfit
Amon Amarth, fronted by Johan Hegg, debuted with
the EP Sorrow Throughout the Nine World (1996).
Their albums
Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998),
The Avenger (1999), with new guitarist Johan Soderberg,
and
The Crusher (2001)
continued an old tradition of Scandinavian bands playing heavy music with
mythological lyrics, basically writing a modern soundtrack to ancient epics.
Versus the World (2002), possibly their artistic zenith,
Fate of Norns (2004) and
With Oden on Our Side (2006) perfected their art of
anthemic singalongs.
They suddenly became stars with
Twilight of the Thunder God (2008), thanks to a shimmering production
and catchy riffs,
but
Surtur Rising (2011) seemed to prove that it had been an accident.
