Finland's Children of Bodom tempered their full-frontal assault with insanely
fast neoclassical keyboards
on the mini-album Something Wild (1997).
The guitar melodies of Alexi Laiho highlighted
Hatebreeder (1999) and Follow the Reaper (2001).
The quality of their albums, however, declined rapidly starting with
Hate Crew Deathroll (2003) and reaching a nadir on
Are You Dead Yet (2005) and
Blooddrunk (2008), albums sabotaged by poor song-writing and a trivial
take on the speed-metal genre.
This new stage led to the melodic classic-sounding hard-rock of
Relentless, Reckless Forever (2011), with
Not My Funeral and Was It Worth It? and the usual assetts
(notably keyboardist Janne Wirman) and liabilities
(vocalist Alexi Laiho).
They disbanded after
Halo of Blood (Nuclear Blast, 2013), I Worship Chaos (Nuclear Blast, 2015) and Hexed (Nuclear Blast, 2018).
Alex Laiho died at the end of 2020.
