Led by songwriting twins Kerry and Gary Gilchrist,
Freed Unit is a trio from Leicester (England)
that plays amateurish psychedelic-pop halfway between
Stereolab and Oasis.
Field Reports From Out-There (Bedazzled, 1997) leverages on
the quirky, retro sound of Moog and Farfisa keyboards and on space-rock guitars.
But only
There's A Light Always Shining and
Your Sister Is A Junkie show the genius of
Jessamine and
Mercury Rev.
The singles
Getting Used To Not Fitting In/ Same Street Different Planet (Sorted, 1997),
The City (Sorted, 1997)
and
Widdershins/ Stormtroopers of Moog (Pickled Egg, 1998)
clarified the melodic intent of the twins. The sound often borders on
synth-pop, albeit with a whimsical twist.
Things Are Looking Up (Enraptured, 1998) collects these singles
and adds a few gems in different modes:
Everything is Nothing is an epic freak-out,
Rewriting History is a neurotic ditty in the vein of XTC,
Left Behind is a gentle ballad that harks back to San Francisco's 1960s.
Masonic Youth (Out-There, 1998) and Chewingumouth (Rocket Racer, 1999) are the new singles.
Gigglegoo (Freed Unit, 2000) is a more baroque effort but does not
significantly alter the formula.
The Whistling Song,
Linda's Washing Her Hair,
Emmeline Angel,
Run Down By An Ambulance,
Over & Out!,
Catch The Next Train Home,
Corruption...,
Maypole Syrup,
Day-Glo Morning,
The Charm Of Me,
Did Piddy Help?,
Message,
The Magic Place In The Middle Of Your Face,
More Greetings From Ratcliffe Culey

Guidati dai gemelli cantautori Kerry e Gary
Field Reports From Out-There (Bedazzled, 1997)
space-rock. Ma solo There's A Light Always Shining e Your Sister Is A Junkie
I singoli Getting Used
To Not Fitting In/ Same Street Different Planet (Sorted, 1997), The City
(Sorted, 1997) e Widdershins/ Stormtroopers of Moog (Pickled Egg, 1998),
Things
Are Looking Up (Enraptured, 1998)
contiene questi singoli e aggiunge alcune gemme in differenti modi:
Everything Is Nothing è un epico freak-out, Rewriting History è una canzoncina
Masonic Youth
(Out-There, 1998) e Chewingumouth (Rocket Racer, 1999) sono i nuovi singoli.
Gigglegoo (Freed Unit, 2000) è un lavoro più
barocco ma non altera sostanzialmente la formula. The Whistling Song, Linda's Washing Her Hair,
Emmeline Angel, Run Down By An Ambulance, Over & Out!, Catch The Next Train
Home, Corruption..., Maypole Syrup, Day-Glo Morning, The Charm Of Me, Did Piddy
Help?, Message, The Magic Place In The Middle Of Your Face, More Greetings From
