Ordo Equitum Solis (a French-Italian duo of vocals and guitar, Nathalie Herrera and Paolo De Marco) specialized in solemn, melancholy folk ballads redolent of medieval music, both troubadours' songs and Gregorian liturgy. Inevitably, Solstitii Temporis Sensus (Musica Maxima Magnetica, 1990) and Animi Aegritudo (1991) sounded derivative of Sol Invictus and Dead Can Dance.

The EP OE (1993) and the live Paraskenia (1994) simply recycled the same ideas, but Hecates (1995) and Planetes (1999) showed an increased mastery in producing the sound of their acoustic "canzoni".

Following on the heels of the EP Signs (Sinope, 1999) and the double-disc anthology Octo (1999), a new studio album, Metamorphosis (2000), experimented with a more varied format.
